a winter walk

A few weeks ago, we got a ton of snow in Indianapolis (as they did everywhere).  On my day off from school, I hiked around the gardens at Butler University along the canal.  It was incredibly beautiful and peaceful, although because it was so cold, I couldn’t stay out for long.

It’s become a habit now to spend at least one afternoon of the weekend traipsing through the woods.  I love the quiet and the chance to explore the uninhabited parts of the city.

a walk in the woods

In my last few days of fall intercession before school resumes again on Monday, I’ve taken the time to do some things that I never seem to get around to when working full-time.  Today, I brought my camera and sketchbook to a park on the north side of the city, which is also a nature preserve.

I have been so swamped these past weeks with cycling-related stuff for school that I have not had a chance to post until now.  We successfully kicked off our Bike Train and Bicycle Community Day this past weekend, and I have almost finished writing the Safe Routes to School grant due in a few weeks.  In the midst of it all, however, I managed to find some time for outdoor rejuvenation.

I have been thinking for a long time now about investing in a really nice camera, and this weekend, I finally took the plunge and bought a Canon Rebel XS.  It came with a sweet package, which now means that I have two zoom lenses: one that goes from 18-55mm, and the other that goes from 55-250mm.  As I am leaving for Italy to study the schools of Reggio Emilia on Thursday, I have spent the last few days practicing with my new love.  The sky was incredible tonight as the sun was setting, so here are some lovely views of my neighborhood.

While walking to meeting this morning (we have this lovely little Quaker meetinghouse about two blocks from our apartment), I noticed a tiny little purple flower sprouting in the beds outside our steps.

Our neighbors down the way also have this fantastic garden with a homemade scarecrow.  He looked so perfect next to the old garden shed that I had to take a picture.

Inside a tin can…

Tin Coffee Can

Life in the city….why not a picture of the inside of a tin coffee can? I finally finished organizing my room, which also serves as my studio space, so I thought a new blog for a new attempt at a simpler, more organized life.  Today was incredibly gorgeous, with temperatures in the seventies.  I cleaned off the table and chairs on our balcony in preparation for spring…

I also found these beads:
